You are tired of museums..bird watching..Humm-Drum Sports? Cathedrals didn't impress you that much either? Then... How about spelunking? Usually known as cave exploring or caving. Sounds attractive? Exploring caves is a thrilling and magical experience! You'll be able to admire nature with a touch of mystery..I suggest you start spelunking in the popular "Las Cuevas del Rey Marcos". It's no wonder why they are so popular. They are amazingly beautiful! Huge rock masses with stalactites and stalagmites attachedto them. You can hear a resounding echo in the darkness.. Mystery can be very attractive. But be fore-warned about something...these caves have a subterranean river. The tour guide will advise you to hold the rope really tight, make sure you listen to him! You don't want to loose your balance, do you? Oh, and there is this amazing rock. The leaning tower of Pisa! If you look carefully at the rock, you'll find it is very similar to the tower in Italy with the same. But not just that..You can also enjoy the artificial swimming pools and...there's even one for children! Camping, guided tours, food area, and much more! Actually here's a really interesting fact about "Las Cuevas del Rey Marcos"..they were used for rituals by the Mayan culture. See...you can find History everywhere in Guatemala! Even in the caves! Caving can be an educational adventure! I also forgot to mention how to get there. Las Cuevas del Rey Marcos are approximately six km. away from San Juan Chamelco in Alta Verapaz. Next spelunking destination... National Park of Candelaria Caves Owned and run by French speleologist Daniel Dreux since 1974, here you will find the community of Candelaria Camposant. They have something different to offer you...Huge dry caves! You can find tons of stalactites and stalagmites here, and they are considered to be the most beautiful caves in Guatemala.  Here you'll find two amazing caves: -Ventana de Seguridad -Cúpula de Murciélagos Dare to explore them! It's a paradise for spelunking! Plenty of Maya history and culture.. Also... Rappelling, kayaking and tubing can also be done! Hence you can't overlook this place...A must-see destination! Remember to follow the tourist path. You wouldn't want to walk near the fragile structures.There's a river that passes in and out of the caves: the Candelaria River. You can even use boats to ride across this river. Enjoy the ride for approximately 10 hours! There are tons of agencies which promote the practice of spelunking. Most of them offer complete tours. Some well known companies are: - Maya Aventura - Discovery Nature - Maya Exotic What do they offer? It varies, but most include: - Breakfast - Guided tour - Helmet and hiking boots - Lunch - Entrance fee And much more... The National Park of Candelaria Caves opens daily. From 8 am to 4 pm.
