Guatemala Radio by: Wolf Sebring
Guatemala Radio - There is not a lot variety on the radio but there are many stations. Most stations usually play Latin rock or Merengue. Merengue is a favorite to play loudly on the buses in this country. Some radio does not reach the mountainous or indigenous regions. Of course if you scan the radio stations in Guatemala City you are going to find much more. La Voz de Guatemala is the government-owned station in this country. As with any government-owned station in Latin America, what you hear will be slanted a bit toward the institutions in power. The station plays a variety of classical music and is a public service station with news shows on social issues, information on children, and information on health. It is in Spanish but if you are taking one of the Spanish immersion courses here in the country, listening to Spanish radio can help you learn. This public network also extends to other towns: Totonicapan, Quetzaltenano, Tikal, and San Marcos. In Guatemala City, the station can be found at 107.3 FM and 107.5 FM in the other towns. Other stations include: Emisoras Unidas (http://grupo.emisorasunidas.com/) found at 89.7 FM in Guatemala. This is also a conglomerate network that has the following sister stations: 99.3 FM, La Grande - This is a station that plays dance music such as Reggaeton and Mezclas (Mezclas is the word for "mixed"). 97.7 Kiss FM - This station seems to cater to the American crowd and even has programming for 80's tunes. 88.1 Fabuestereo FM - This station plays classical music. It can be found online at http://fabuestereo.emisorasunidas.com/. 90.1 Yosisideral FM - This station plays what would be called "Top 40" in North America. Its website is at http://yosisideral.emisorasunidas.com/ 96.5 Atmosfera FM - This is the local rock radio station. Its website is at http://atmosfera.emisorasunidas.com/. Of course there are other Guatemala radio stations--too many to list here. The ones above are the popular ones. |
